Hapkido's Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine
Connection:
|
 |
How is Hapkido related to traditional
healing arts of the Orient?
Fundamental concept of traditional healing arts of the far east is the
manipulation of Ki (Chi) to achieve optimum health. In these arts the
manipulation of the Ki is accomplished by using various modalities according to
the documented principles and diagnostic methods of traditional medicine.
The principles of the traditional medicine are based philosophical concepts of
Tao (Do), same principles used in application of the Hapkido techniques.
|
|
| .About 70% of traditional Hapkido techniques deal with skeletal manipulation
and joint locks. As clearly evidenced from studying the ancient medical
literature, such as Yellow Emperors Classic of Internal Medicine, and from
viewing the intricacies of the classic techniques from the perspective of
modern biomechanics, that these techniques have originated from systems of
Tuina; the muscle, bone and joint manipulation techniques practiced by the
ancient people many centuries ago. For further evidence one can take a
look at modern medical text books and read how a shoulder is accidentally
dislocated and once it is found to be dislocated, how it is put back in to its'
place. In ancient times it was a common practice to consult medical authorities
of the time, when designing techniques for maximum effectiveness in the
battlefield.
In many of the offensive and defensive techniques utilizing skeletal
manipulations and joint locks, grabbing or striking hand makes direct
contact with pressure points. These points are the same points as in classic
acupuncture literature. These pressure points are manipulated in the
opponents body to cause adverse effect by rubbing, pressing or hitting.
Tuina uses the same methods, in same exact locations when aiming for a healing
result. Ever commonly referred Water Theory of Hapkido, directly
correlates to the Ki flow in relation to the Meridian system of the human body.

Different point classifications, such as Entry and Exit Points, Luo
Connecting Points, Window of the Sky Points, 13 ghost Points, Forbidden Points
etc. have their martial applications.
Further more, in the advanced levels of Hapkido practice, point combinations
and point energetics are used in similar fashion to that of Acupuncture, however
in this case to achieve a martial effect.
Who is qualified to teach the healing
aspects of Hapkido?
These days it is nearly impossible to find an instructor who has been taught
classic Hapkido techniques. Furthermore Healing aspects of Hapkido is not
necessarily a simple subject to teach. To teach this type of knowledge,
the Hapkido instructor must not only know the traditional Hapkido techniques,
but also be trained as a Doctor of Acupuncture. Training of an
Acupuncturist is not an easy task. It currently requires approximately six
years of total university level training, difficult licensing examinations and
tremendous amount of studying. Understandably very few martial arts
instructors in the world are willing to go through so much education, hardship
and trouble to learn this aspect of Hapkido. For most, physical rigors of
decades of training is hard enough.
Although it is possible to find books written by martial artist claiming
expertise in so called "pressure point fighting", unfortunately
the subject matter goes much deeper. If you are truly interested in learning
about vital points and the healing aspects of Hapkido, you will need to find an
educated and traditionally trained Hapkido Instructor with background in Oriental
Medicine. Make sure your Hapkido instructor has completed a nationally
accredited graduate level clinical and academic program in Oriental Medicine
and, holds government recognized licensing in Acupuncture.
